Students match up pairs of water picture cards and, in the process, learn to distinguish water in the three states of matter: solid, liquid and gas. Young students have observed water in two states in their environment, such as ice cubes (solid) or rain showers (liquid). They may not have recognized water in its gaseous state: water vapor in air or their breath. Provided with a basic understanding of water in the three states of matter, students have the foundation on which to build knowledge of other water-related concepts.
